Directed by Alain Resnais, Night and Fog (Nuit et brouillard) is a 1956 French documentary on Nazi Germany’s concentration, labor, and extermination camps during the Second World War. Made eleven years after liberation — and in the midst of the Franco-Algerian War which involved mass internment of political prisoners, torture, and mass executions — the documentary was intended both to commemorate liberation and, equally as critical, warn contemporary French audiences about the horrors of modern warfare and the possibility of the Holocaust’s recurrence.
