Italian Troops Enter Addis Ababa (1936)

On May 5, 1936, Fascist Italy’s troops entered a half-abandoned and destroyed Addis Ababa, the capital city of Haile Selassie I’s east African kingdom of Ethiopia, formerly marking the end of the Second Italo-Ethiopian War and the beginning of what Benito Mussolini would proclaim as Italian East Africa.

The following is a British Pathé newsreel from 1936 which shows the city’s devastation and the occupying Italian forces.
