The following is a British Pathé newsreel from 1920-1921 which offered the British public, as well as the broader Western European community, “the first pictures taken since the beginning of Bolshevik rule showing conditions of peasant life in Soviet Russia.” In addition to showing “groups of … refugees” sitting along the roadsides of rural Russia, the newsreel sought to demonstrate that effects of the “disastrous failure of the annual grain crop,” which had led to widespread famine in large swaths of the nascent Soviet Union.
