Enrico Da Seta, “Here Is the Most Appropriate Weapon” (1936)

In 1936, the Italian cartoonist Enrico Da Seta published a handful of collectable postcards, which were intended for Fascist Italy’s colonial troops. Commemorating Benito Mussolini’s conquest of Ethiopia and the subsequent declaration of the Italian Empire, Da Seta’s fumetti highlighted Italy’s imperial exploits in East Africa. The following postcard, for instance, openly celebrated Fascist Italy’s use of poisonous gasses against the Ethiopians — a flagrant violation of the 1925 Geneva Protocol, to which Italy was a signatory.
